Media's Impact on Socioeconomic Progress and Social Justice

February 24-25, 2020

The 2020 Working Group held by AMCAP and Bahria University Karachi Campus hosted six sessions on various topics related to social and economic development. The first session "CPEC as a Game Changer" focused on the role of CPEC as a game changer for Pakistan and China, and featured Mr. Li Bijian, the Consul General of China, as a guest speaker. It set the stage for discussions on the transformative impact of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and its role as a key catalyst for change in both nations.

The second session "Bridging the Communication Gap: Bringing Social Development Initiative to the Grassroots" brought together key stakeholders, including the Education Minister, social activists, academicians, media professionals, and industrialists, to deliberate on strategies for bridging communication gaps and extending social development initiatives to grassroots levels.

A poignant exploration awaited in the third session,"Portrayal of Gender Equality and Social Justice in Media",which focused on the portrayal of gender equality and social justice in media. Attendees delved into the challenges and opportunities inherent in reshaping societal perspectives through media narratives. The fourth session, "ICT's: The Pull String for Developing Countries" attended by a diverse mix of academicians, analysts, media professionals, and businessmen, explored the potential of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as catalysts for developing countries. Discussions centered on identifying best practices and strategies for leveraging ICTs to drive socioeconomic progress. The fifth session, "Media Ethics in Reporting Economic Crisis and Social Injustice" scrutinized media ethics in reporting economic crises and social injustices, unraveling their implications for public opinion and policy-making. Concluding the enriching series, the last session, "Media Ethics in Reporting Economic Crisis and Social Injustice", addressed media education, emphasizing the imperative of building a robust human resource pipeline for future markets. Attendees explored current trends and identified critical gaps within the field, contributing to a nuanced understanding of media education's evolving landscape.
