AMCAP-SZABIST 2019 International Media Conference
Media Education in Pakistan: Challenges and Opportunities
February 28, 2019
SZABIST Islamabad Campus, Islamabad
Ever-changing technology continually reshapes the global media landscape, influencing every aspect of life, including media education and practices. This impact introduces new challenges to the symbiotic relationship between technology and the media. Expectations are high for the new means of communication, but there is also increasing skepticism due to corporate monopolies. The proliferation of media education institutions and media outlets worldwide indicates a landscape replete with challenges and opportunities. The growing necessity in media education to identify and conceptualize challenges, formulate appropriate policies, devise effective strategies, and utilize available resources to convert challenges into opportunities is a pressing concern.
In an integrative spirit, the AMCAP International Conference 2019 aimed to engage in dialogue and deliberations with all stakeholders, collectively producing content to serve as a guideline in media education. The goal was to develop media education both as a social science discipline and as a professional degree. The conference was organized to foster cooperation in academic education and research in the field of Media Education by the Association of Media & Communication Academic Professionals (AMCAP), Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology (SZABIST), and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan (HEC).
While numerous challenges confronted media education, this conference focused on three themes. The first theme addressed how new media had transformed the traditional media landscape globally and underscored the need to fully conceptualize and incorporate these challenges into media education. The second theme focused on emerging ethical issues in media, aiming to collectively produce content that could serve as a guideline in media education. Ethical challenges were heightened in a world where tensions and conflicts were on the rise, and regulating media through ethical values was a significant challenge to media education. The third theme centered on conflict communication, emphasizing the inevitability of conflict in societies and relationships. It explored the various types of conflicts, necessitating different communication strategies and approaches, challenging scholars to perceive the "other" with a positive identity rather than as an enemy. Conflict communication was dissected from various perspectives, urging scholars to move beyond binary oppositions and reshape narratives.
The conference themes were structured to provide a comprehensive exploration of the evolving media landscape. Theme 1 delved into the challenges and opportunities posed by new media for media education, addressing the collapsing of traditional theories, the emergence of new theories, e-journalism, popular genres, big data, new technologies, research trends, and gender issues in cyber entrepreneurship. Theme 2 focused on emerging ethical issues in media, exploring areas such as cyberbullying, freedom of expression, political economy, cognitive dissonance, and infotainment. The theme challenged the redefinition of ethics in the context of new media. Theme 3, centered on conflict communication, tackled subjects like imagining futures without considering the "other" as an enemy, examining the pros and cons of conflict communication in cyberspace, and exploring the intersection of gender and conflict communication. Additionally, it addressed citizen journalism and its role in conflict communication.
By structuring the conference around these themes, AMCAP aimed to foster a holistic understanding of the intricate dynamics within media education, ethics, and conflict communication. The collaborative efforts of academics, researchers, and media professionals were expected to generate insights, strategies, and guidelines to navigate the evolving media landscape.
